North West Castle offers visitors comfortable and convenient three-star town centre hotel accommodation in Stranraer. A family owned and run hotel for more than fifty years, ‘The Castle’ was formerly the home of Sir John Ross, the famous Arctic explorer. North West Castle is an excellent base for exploring the beautiful local area and the hotel offers 72 en-suite bedrooms, ‘The Regency’ dining room, The ‘Alpine’ Restaurant and Grill, leisure facilities (swimming pool, sauna, spa bath, gym) and its very own indoor curling rink.


72 en-suite rooms in total with 68 within the main hotel building and four in a separate annexe. From the standard ‘Classic Room’ with traditional décor and all the creature comforts to the ‘Loch View’ rooms with views across Loch Ryan and Ailsa Craig across the old port.

All rooms have free view television channels, trouser press, tea and coffee-making facilities and complimentary mineral water. Room Service is available and all guest rooms in the main hotel are accessible by lift. Guests have free use of the hotel leisure facilities.

A team of chefs use the best local produce to create fresh modern British cuisine in both onsite restaurants and are complemented by an extensive wine list.

The Regency Dining Room is a traditional hotel dining room, with friendly relaxed service and excellent food. Diners can choose from the a la carte or daily three course evening menu.

The ‘Alpine Grill’ Restaurant and Lounge is open each year from October to March, during the curling season, when guests can enjoy a drink, a snack, lunch, or an evening meal while watching some fiercely fought contests on ice. The ‘Alpine’ a la carte menu features freshly prepared favourites from salads to the finest steaks. Meals, light snacks and sweet treats are available all day from 11.30am to 9.00 pm in the evening.

North West Castle Hotel offers a great range of leisure facilities for guests to enjoy.

The indoor curling rink with superb viewing from the Alpine Bar and Grill is well known all over the world and regularly hosts national and international competitions as well as leisure curling weekends throughout the winter curling season. Beginners to the Roarin’ Game are welcome and lessons can be booked.

The swimming pool is great for families or serious swimmers and the wide seating area around it allows guests to relax after their swim or poolside spa bath or sauna. In the adjoining gym, equipment includes: treadmill, cross trainer, rowing machine, bicycle and further multi gym with weights and with the sauna and spa bath close by you can easily move from one area to the other as part of your personal workout routine.

Guests may also enjoy a large games room with snooker and pool tables, table tennis, carpet bowling and a small selection of children's toys.

As well as the hotel's indoor leisure facilities and curling rink, there is plenty on offer in the local area around North West Castle. Stranraer is a busy little town with a good selection of shops and cafes, and the surrounding countryside has golf courses such as Creachmore, Dunskey and Glenluce to enjoy as well as beautiful gardens to explore at Logan, Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and Dunskey House.

There are beautiful beaches at Lady Bay, or even closer, the Cockle Shore just a few hundred yards from the hotel, and the long peninsula known as the 'Rhins of Galloway' is dotted with pretty villages, amid very beautiful countryside. At the tip, lies the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point, where you can climb the lighthouse, spot some rare seabirds, or perhaps some seals or even porpoises.
